Do you ever think about what you think about?
It’s a strange question, I know. Often a thought pops in our head, and we get hooked in. It grabs our attention, and then it goes round and round and round in our minds. It might be something off the wall, or it might be a frequent worry like “do they like me?”
One of the reasons I teach Mindfulness, is because it’s a way of training the mind to stay in one place, a bit like taking it down the gym. And, like any sort of exercise, the more you do, the better you get at it.
You could try this:
Close your eyes for a moment and notice how quickly your mind starts thinking. Then imagine the thoughts that pop in are speech bubbles above your head. What do they say? See if you can notice the thoughts without indulging what they mean or where they come from. Stay with the moment, without allowing the thoughts to take you off at a tangent. Get curious about the thoughts as they happen by recognising when you think, but without giving the thoughts any sort of meaning.
